Common Interview Questions

Here is a list of interview questions for you to consider as you prepare to present your portfolio.  These are all common question formats, and I have adapted some of them for our class.  Keep in mind that when you apply for a job, your interviewer will likely ask you more about your work history, salary goals, and other employment-specific questions.  When you interview for a scholarship, your interviewer will likely ask you more questions about your general goals, your interests, and maybe some creative questions that involve problem-solving or hypothetical situations (like #21).

I will select a few of these for your interview.  I will definitely ask #21.

  1. Tell me about yourself.
  2. What do you know about our organization?
  3. Why are you taking American Literature this year?  What are you looking forward to in the Spring?
  4. What (strengths/talents/experience) do you bring to this learning community?
  5. What are your weaknesses?
  6. What are your strengths?
  7. How do you explain your G.P.A.?
  8. What challenges are you looking for?
  9. What would an excellent performance look like in this role?
  10. Tell me an achievement you are proud of.
  11. What grade do you currently deserve and why?
  12. What can you do that other learners can’t?
  13. What will you do in the first month of next semester?
  14. What kind of learning environment do you like best?
  15. What’s your dream job?
  16. What motivates you?
  17. If you were an animal what would you be?
  18. Describe your character in under 30 words.
  19. What are your salary expectations?
  20. If your house suddenly caught fire and you could only take three items with you, which three items would you select?  Why?
  21. Do you have any questions?
